German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE)

The voice of the German renewable energy sector

The German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) is the umbrella organization for German renewable energy associations. The federation was founded in 1991 and represents the overall interests of the renewable energy industry in the political and public sphere.

Our 49 member organizations unite the sectors of wind and solar energy, biomass, water power and geothermal energy and represent a total of over 30 000 individual members and companies.BEE is actively promoting renewable energy on an EU level, federal level and state level.

For more than 25 years, BEE has been the voice of the renewable energy sector. Our work has consisted of continuously creating, sustaining and improving the necessary framework conditions for scaling-up renewable energy and increasing its market penetration, thus leading to a democratic transformation of the energy system, the so-called “Energiewende” as a whole. BEE’s long-term goal is the transition to a system based on 100 per cent renewable energy.

Politics and Research

We have been developing and fine-tuning policies and strategies and providing technical and systemic solutions, e.g. by commissioning studies and formulating position papers relevant to the current policy debates. BEE played a significant role in the passing of the legislation supporting renewables (EEG – The Renewable Energy Sources Act) that laid the foundation for Germany’s impressive renewables increase in its electricity consumption (from 3.1% in 1990 to 31.7% in 2016) and the creation of more than 330.000 jobs. Through its crucial support, BEE has contributed to enabling fair conditions for renewable energy, and effectively bolstered investment security and innovation.

BEE’s activities are not limited to the national level. Despite having its headquarters in Berlin, representatives also work in Brussels and influence EU decision-making. BEE is a founding member of the European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF) and, more recently, of the Global 100% Renewable Energy Platform. BEE contributed to its Roadmap for a Renewable Energy Future (REMap). We also cooperate with numerous national umbrella and technology-specific RE associations in Europe and have continuously supported the founding of the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA).

Events and Conferences

Apart from its aforementioned activities in the legislative and scientific fields, BEE furthermore hosts a number of events.

One main event on the BEE schedule is the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD), which the Federation co-hosts alongside the German Federal Government, the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar), the German Energy Agency (dena), and eclareon. The conference was held for the third time in a row in 2017 and is dedicated to shaping concepts for an intelligent global energy transition. By co-organizing this conference, BEE enabled participants from more than 70 countries, among which 30 energy or external affairs ministers and high level industry speakers, to interact with 50 international delegations.

Over the years, BEE’s New Year’s reception also became a “must-attend” event in the renewable energy community and a meeting point for representatives of the political sphere as well as the industry. Top-ranking decision-makers such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel hold speeches and have the opportunity to get in touch with the 1000+ guests.
